BASS
The Birth of Bass is the story of the emergence of the electric bass guitar and a celebration of the instrument’s pioneers.
Bass is the foundation of modern music - it is the underlying tremulous tone that affects us on primal level and makes us want to dance. And yet this fundamental part of the sonic spectrum, that we now just take for granted, is relatively new. The technology that allowed the bass to really punch through, didn’t arrive until the early ’60’s, when a handful of electric bass players grasped the potential for driving melodic bass lines and transformed music forever. These pioneers realized the power of bass to propel a song and give every hit its key ingredient: the infectious hook. They experimented with intricate rhythms, counter puntal melodies and expansive and funky playing styles that lifted bass playing to another higher dimension. With that, the bass guitar itself was transformed from being the instrument that no self-respecting musician wanted to be lumbered with, to the summit of cool.
