"P.Funk Documentary Airs on October 11, 2005
Posted by: NewFunkTimes on Aug 10, 2005 - 03:56 AM

Yvonne Smith's P.Funk documentary "Parliament Funkadelic: One Nation Under a Groove" which we mentioned last October already (read the archived news piece) will have its broadcast premiere in the U.S. on Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at 10 p.m. on PBS as part of the "Independent Lens" series.

From the announcement on the PBS website: >> Find out how George Clinton, the mastermind behind the band Parliament Funkadelic, expressed the cultural alienation of young African Americans, creating an alternate universe of “aliens” who brought the redemptive power of funk to a world sorely in need of a new point of view. <<

On September 27, 2005 PBS will launch a website for the documentary: >> Learn about the band’s history, read an interview with the filmmaker, test your P-Funk knowledge and share your thoughts online. <<

Check out the press release announcing the 2005-2006 season of "Independent Lens

It seems like GC didn't give the rights for a european version. I sent a mail to the author and she was sorry for that.

It'll never be in cinemas since it is only 65 minutes loong and because it is aimed at a very small fraction of the moviegoers...

I do hope though, that the program will be available on DVD as PBS usually does but then again considering the mength of this documentary I am afraid it will be too short to print on a DVD...

Some comments about this documentary...

" Concerning the documentary. I was impressed with the editing and the completeness of the story, as it were.
Though obviously a low budget operation, Eddie Griffin(cartoon) did add a nice William Collins overtone to the presentation. It was good to see
reference made to the bands that both influenced and were influenced by the p. I greatly appreciated the footage of Bootsy Jammin with the JB's. On the darker, yet realistic side of things it was slightly disturbing to see rick gardner sitting in the hallway trippin on acid(allegedly). I commend George for his lack of bitterness towards the industry and lawyers
that he employed for blocking his Berry Gordy status.
Surely the proprieters and members of pfunk@yahoogroups.com has thoroughly covered the history and ins and outs of the p-funk empire, however this documentary was well taken and will perhaps spark
more thorough and invasive works around the subculture of maggot brains.
