GRAND SLAM - The Sounds of Funk Revue (2004)

Messagepar Funkygirl » 23/09/04 22:44

I just received it from Funk to the Max

Image

It's a mix of P-Funk with a Rock Energy and some Hip-Hop... It reminds me a lot Fishbone when they decided to groove

Grand Slam is a German band (I've heard about them but I wasn't knowing their music since now...)

The Cd contains 12 long jam/tracks (between 5 and 8 minutes for 7 of the tracks) + a bonus track and is 73 minutes long

I give you some comments on the tracks :

 "We Keep on Doin' the Phonk" : It's what it means, a fat Funk track with heavy guitar.

 "Gotta Go 4 What U Got" more classical Funk in is construction, with scratchs.

 "U don't Ring my Bell" is more bluesy : it's not what I prefer but it's a good tune.

 I ADORE "Amusez-vous Bien" : Well done
And yes your read well it's a track with only French Lyrics (Anyway I don't understand all LOL You can consult us the next time  - I think it's a prononciation's problem  ) and it grooves VERY WELL in a P-Funk Style
I think they laugh a little at french's people with the cheese's scene on the bridge

 "Win the Lottery" is very Rock/Funk/Fusion... I think some of you will love this one... I like the guitar solo... I'm near to JUMP alone on it so... Near Slapbak style in their wildest tracks

 "We Guts to Party" a Funk/Hip Hop track with some samples and heavy bass and keyboards...

 Last "Hunk/Pop" a great jam with a slapping Bass, scrats, deep voices and a saxophone solo (One of the tracks I love the most...)

To resume, different from what I used to listen but very pleasant : there's a lot of energy and P-Funk vibes in this GOOD Cd :!:

"The sounds of Funk Revue" is well chosen title to present what's inside

 You can order it here : www.funktothemax.com

AMusez vous bien is a potential hit!!!! And sooooo funny
They make fun of us and our cheese alright but I love it!!!!
The groove is a killer!
The other track that made me get down instantly is We Keep On Doing The Funk... The title says it all and the bass line is a real killer

More on this great album later as I haven't had time to listen to all the stuff in detail...

I copy it here Wonder

Wonder B a écrit :The New Grand Slam is ... slammin'!

I love it. It shows the band going to the next phase in terms of funkmanship and production...

The immediate hit (for me!) is the Great 'WE KEEP ON DOING THE PHONK'!

"...We keep on doin' the funk, no sell-out... for the funk of it... "

This can't be any more P than it is...

Another track that I am sure all French Funkateers will love is the ultra funky 'AMUSEZ VOUS BIEN'... the french lyrics are a riot... absolutely hilarious... and funnily they manage to make french sound really funky, when many bands in our own land are still looking to achieve that goal!
Led by a funky synth riff and complimented by some nice horn licks, that one is a sure floor filler. Love the bridge with the heavy guitar...
'... je vais vous faire un amuse bouche... c'est une tartine avec du fromage... mais qu'est ce que c'est... çà pue......' how 'bout that.... revenez... c'est du funk... oui du vrai P-Funk' LOOOOOOOOOOL

Way too funky... the Germans are making fun of our eating habits but they do it with perfect taste...!

It moves to english towards the end of the song... 'it would be ludicrous to think that we are new to this..'.... well done indeed....

The intro to 'WE GUTS TO PARTY' is the monster funk clavinet intro to The Streets Of San Francisco.... a true funk killer.... it goes on with some gritty guitar and bass synth... A little slapped bass spread to good mesure and there you have it... another winner...

'HUNK/FOP' is hip hop funk (or is it funk or hip hop?)...
"Grand Slam kick a groove like a bullet from a gun... always fresh and always funky and always on the one... most of all we still love to FUNK!"

Is that a message we all want to hear or what? I say YES! VERY YES! LOL

Frankly, I say to the people who thought the sound was a little on the weak side on the previous album, you WILL BE more than pleasantly surprised...

A sure winner ........

Well Joe
I'll be in NYC this very Saturday!!! I am coming in (if there's no delay) around 2.20PM which means I could be at the hotel (Millenium on Times Square) around 4pm which leaves me an open schedule from then on...
Unfortunately this is quite a short saty as I am leaving the newt day early in the afternoon... So I don't know where you'll be (especially after the New Year's Eve Party which I'll be missing because of this flight) but we could either meet on Saturday evening or Sunday morning... it all depends where you are geographically!

Cynthia and Rose (Sly's sister) could be there too but I need more info on that. That's what we are working on... I know they were part of the initial project...
Cynthia is definitely a crowd pleaser and easy on the eyes as I would put it mildly (!) LOL so I definitely would like to see her in...

I have finally got and listened to this CD thanks to http://www.funktothemax.com/

It's really well mix of different style of grooves, P-Funk, Funk, Hip Hop, Ballads. It's really great and very mature in their mastering of music.
